Description
TSV-2® is an intranasal vaccine containing modified live virus strains of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis-parainfluenza type 3 (IBR-PI3) virus grown on a bovine cell line. A sterile diluent is supplied to rehydrate the freeze-dried viral components of the vaccine. TSV-2 is unique in that the modified live virus strains it contains are temperature-specific, capable of growing only in the relatively cool respiratory tissues of cattle. This feature makes the vaccine safe for use in pregnant cows, while stimulating rapid local protection.

Key Features
- TSV-2 is a rapid-response tool that provides quick, dependable protection when facing a potential IBR outbreak in young stock, or when receiving long-haul, high-risk calves.
- Because the modified live viruses in TSV-2 have limited growth at temperatures above 39° C (the normal body temperature of cattle), they are restricted to the nasal passages. There the vaccine stimulates local and systemic immunity, including the production of interferon, an anti-viral protein.
- TSV-2 is the only intranasal, temperature-specific IBR-PI3 vaccine, stimulating local immunity in the nasal mucosa, the site of natural infection. Stimulation of a local immune response results in rapid onset of protection.
- Inability of the modified live viral agents in TSV-2 to grow in the fetus or internal organs means that pregnant cows can be safely vaccinated.
- In an onset-of-protection study, 2 pairs of susceptible calves remained clinically normal when subjected to contact challenge 72 and 48 hours after vaccination with virulent IBR virus. One calf challenged 24 hours after vaccination remained normal; another exhibited mild clinical signs. All control calves and calves used for contact challenge were clinically affected.
- Safety of the temperature-specific IBR strain was demonstrated in a test where it was administered to 1,019 pregnant cows in 12 herds. No abortions attributed to IBR were observed.
