Description
ALBON® (sulfadimethoxine) is a low-dose, rapidly absorbed, long-acting sulfonamide in scored bolus form, for treatment of bacterial infections in cattle.
Approved Uses
Effective in the treatment of cattle for shipping fever complex and bacterial pneumonia associated with Pasteurella spp. sensitive to sulfadimethoxine, and calf diphtheria and footrot associated with Fusobacterium necrophorum (Sphaerophorus necrophorus) sensitive to sulfadimethoxine.
Key Features
- Effective in the treatment of bacterial infections in cattle commonly associated with: shipping fever complex, bacterial pneumonia, calf diphtheria, and footrot.
- Laboratory studies have demonstrated sulfadimethoxine to be effective against a wide variety of bacterial organisms, including streptococci, staphylococci, E. coli, and Salmonella. (Clinical significance of laboratory studies has not been confirmed.)
- Rapidly absorbed and long-acting. Comparatively low doses give rapid, sustained blood levels required for effective disease therapy. Provides effective treatment at low cost.
- Sulfadimethoxine has been shown to be well-tolerated with relatively high solubility at the pH normally occurring in the bovine kidney.
- ALBON has a low degree of toxicity and reliably avoids undesirable side effects at the recommended dosage.
- Approved for use in lactating dairy cows.
- Short withdrawal times—60 hours for milk, 7 days for meat.
Packaging
- 5 g sulfadimethoxine per single-scored bolus or 15 g sulfadimethoxine per single-scored bolus
Dosage
- Initial dose equivalent to 25 mg/lb of body weight and subsequent daily dose equivalent to 12.5 mg/lb of body weight. In most cases, treatment for 3–4 days is adequate.
